Solar plane lands in New York City

A solar-powered airplane finished crossing the United States on Saturday, landing in New York City after flying over the Statue of Liberty during its historic bid to circle the globe, the project team said.  The spindly, single-seat experimental aircraft, dubbed Solar Impulse 2, arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport at about 4 a.m. local time after it took off about five hours beforehand at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Pennsylvania, the team reported on the airplane's website.  Such a pleasure to land in New York! For the 14th time we celebrate sustainability," said the project's co-founder Andre Borschberg on Twitter after flying over the city and the Statue of Liberty during the 14th leg of the trip around the globe. The Swiss team flying the aircraft in a campaign to build support for clean energy technologies hopes eventually to complete its circumnavigation in Abu Dhabi, where the journey began in March 2015. The solar cr...

YouTube is introducing live-streamed 360-degree videos on its service

The Google-owned platform said select concerts from California's Coachella festival would be the first to use the virtual reality facility.  In addition, it announced videos on its service could now be enhanced with "spatial audio", which simulates the effect of sounds coming from different directions and distances.  One expert said the innovation could greatly enhance VR experiences.  The announcements were timed to coincide with the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference in Las Vegas, where several new virtual reality products are being launched.  GoPro, Adobe and Sky Italia are among those demoing new tech at the event.YouTube made it possible to play interactive 360-degree videos on its site just over a year ago. If viewed on a laptop, viewers can use a mouse to adjust their perspective. But if watched on a smartphone or VR headset, the experience becomes more immersive, as changes in viewpoint correspond to the movements of the device b...

DJI Osmo unveiled a handheld device that integrates a video camera

The Chinese drone-maker DJI has unveiled a handheld device that integrates a video camera and a stabilisation gimbal.  The Osmo captures footage at up to 4K - four times the detail of 1080p high definition - to deliver the kind of shake-free footage that has become associated with drones. At £549 it may be beyond the budget of casual videomakers, but the company believes it has spotted a gap in the market - although other companies sell gimbals for GoPros and other action cameras, they can be fiddly to set up and sometimes require post-processing of the resulting video to make it truly smooth.

Six most successful Fifa video gamers on YouTube have been targeted by cyber-thieves

The hackers stole millions of Fifa coins, the games virtual currency, and sold players worth thousands of pounds.  They are thought to have convinced manufacturer EA Sports to transfer their victims' Origin accounts to email addresses the hackers controlled.  Many other well-known players who do not make videos are also believed to have been hit.  AnesonGib, W2S, Nepenthez, Nick28T, Bateson87 and matthdgamer have more than five million YouTube subscribers between them.  Matthew Craig, the man behind matthdgamer,  "There have been about 10 or more accounts which have been hacked over the last two weeks, me included." In a video, Nick28T said: "Basically, someone called in pretending  to be me and... got in to my account."  An EA representative said: "We encourage all Fifa players to secure their accounts with authentication and verification steps, which we outline on our help and our product sites.  "We are consistently working through our...

Neuroscientists recorded the first video footage of a tiny killer fly catching its prey

They were investigating how the 4mm-long insect decides when to pounce.  Apparently the flies are not much good at judging the size of a target, so they use a strategy based partly on how fast a potential meal is buzzing past.  That means the researchers could trick the flies into going for targets that were far too big, but further away and faster-moving than expected.  The experiments, published in the journal Brain, Behaviour and Evolution , used a species called Coenosia attenuata, which is so good at killing other airborne critters - including fruit flies - that organic farmers use it as a biological control mechanism.  C. attenuata is an unfussy eating machine, explained Dr Paloma Gonzalez-Bellido - and that was partly why she started to study the little predators.  It didn't look like they have a template for what they're looking for," she told.  They go after things that are very slow, after things that are fast, after things that are white, th...

Facebook announces measures to tackle video piracy on its website

Facebook has announced measures to tackle video piracy on its website.  The company said new video matching technology would alert selected content creators if their videos were reposted to Facebook without permission.  In August, YouTube star Hank Green wrote a blog criticising the company over its slow response to video piracy.  Brady Haran, who runs a collection of YouTube channels, told the BBC he still had questions over Facebook's new approach.Facebook has been trying to grow its video business and in July it announced plans to share advertising revenue with content creators for the first time.  But the company has been criticised by prominent video creators such as Mr Green for failing to tackle video piracy. In June, research by advertising agency Ogilvy found that 73% of  the most popular videos on Facebook had been ripped from other websites.  Announcing its new approach, Facebook said: "Our matching tool will evaluate millions of v...
