Solar plane lands in New York City

A solar-powered airplane finished crossing the United States on Saturday, landing in New York City after flying over the Statue of Liberty during its historic bid to circle the globe, the project team said.  The spindly, single-seat experimental aircraft, dubbed Solar Impulse 2, arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport at about 4 a.m. local time after it took off about five hours beforehand at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Pennsylvania, the team reported on the airplane's website.  Such a pleasure to land in New York! For the 14th time we celebrate sustainability," said the project's co-founder Andre Borschberg on Twitter after flying over the city and the Statue of Liberty during the 14th leg of the trip around the globe. Scots nurse Pauline Cafferkey has been discharged from a London hospital after being treated there for a third time since contracting Ebola

The 40-year-old from South Lanarkshire was flown to the Royal Free Hospital on Tuesday after being admitted to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.  The Royal Free said she had been discharged and was "not infectious".  Ms Cafferkey was treated there twice in 2015 after contracting Ebola in Sierra Leone the previous year.  A spokesman for the Royal Free Hospital said: "Pauline Cafferkey has today been discharged from the care of the Royal Free Hospital following her admission due to a complication related to her previous infection by the Ebola virus.  "We can confirm that Pauline is not infectious. The Ebola virus can only be transmitted by direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person while they are symptomatic."The nurse, from Halfway, Cambuslang, contracted the virus while working as part of a British team at the Kerry Town Ebola treatment centre. Scottish nurse Pauline Cafferkey admitted to hospital for the third time since contracting Ebola in 2014

Health officials said she had been admitted for further investigations after routine monitoring but did not give specific details of her condition.  The 40-year-old from South Lanarkshire is said to be "stable" at Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.  An RAF Hercules aircraft has arrived at Glasgow Airport. It is believed this will take her to hospital in London.  Ms Cafferkey was treated at London's Royal Free Hospital twice in 2015 after contracting Ebola in Sierra Leone.  NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: "Ms Cafferkey was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital under routine monitoring by the Infectious Diseases Unit. Ebola affected nurse Pauline Cafferkey full recovery

Pauline Cafferkey initially contracted Ebola while working at a treatment centre in Sierra Leone last year.  She was successfully treated at the Royal Free Hospital in London, but was taken there again in October after the virus caused her to develop meningitis.  The hospital said Ms Cafferkey had now been discharged.  In a statement, it said that the 39-year-old nurse was no longer infectious, was well enough to return to Scotland, and had been transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. A statement from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde added: "We can confirm that Pauline Cafferkey was transferred back to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital to complete her hospital treatment. Nurse Pauline Cafferkey suffering from meningitis due to Ebola

Pauline Cafferkey, 39, was readmitted to an isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital in London earlier this month after suffering an apparent relapse.  Health officials confirmed she had been diagnosed with meningitis caused by Ebola and had a "long recovery ahead".  Ms Cafferkey, from South Lanarkshire, contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone.  Dr Michael Jacobs, who is treating Ms Cafferkey at the Royal Free Hospital in London, said: "Pauline has become unwell by meningitis caused by the Ebola virus. "But to be very clear about this, she hasn't been re-infected with the Ebola virus."This is the original Ebola virus that she had many months ago, which has been lying inside the brain, replicating at a very low level probably, and has now re-emerged to cause this clinical illness of meningitis.
