Solar plane lands in New York City

A solar-powered airplane finished crossing the United States on Saturday, landing in New York City after flying over the Statue of Liberty during its historic bid to circle the globe, the project team said.  The spindly, single-seat experimental aircraft, dubbed Solar Impulse 2, arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport at about 4 a.m. local time after it took off about five hours beforehand at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Pennsylvania, the team reported on the airplane's website.  Such a pleasure to land in New York! For the 14th time we celebrate sustainability," said the project's co-founder Andre Borschberg on Twitter after flying over the city and the Statue of Liberty during the 14th leg of the trip around the globe. The Swiss team flying the aircraft in a campaign to build support for clean energy technologies hopes eventually to complete its circumnavigation in Abu Dhabi, where the journey began in March 2015. The solar cr...

Your Computer Is Your Enemy

The old cliché, "If you want a friend, get a dog" still stands in the 21st Century. It is well established in the medical community that animals can do much to extend the human life span as well as improve the quality of life. Don't live on or vicariously through your computer.  A pastor once said his job was to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable. Thus we have the difference between a real live pet and an inanimate electro-mechanical object - in this case the personal computer. The pet comforts while the computer, improperly used and/or over used, is a thief and a murderer.  Besides, the computer, especially if you run a Microsoft Operating System and Microsoft production software, requires much more maintenance than does a pet. This alone is enough to drive most users' blood pressure through the roof. How many times do you suspect that needs to happen before it begins to take a toll on the human body? It is even more aggravating than t...

Japanese conglomerate Toshiba has a record 550bn yen ($4.5bn) annual loss and cut 6,800 jobs

The company, whose activities range from laptops to TVs to nuclear energy, is shedding the jobs in its consumer electronics division.  News of the predicted losses sent shares in Toshiba down by nearly 10%.  The restructuring comes after Toshiba admitted earlier this year that it had overstated profits for six years.  The scandal led to the resignation of Toshiba's president and vice-president. Masashi Muromachi took over as chief executive and president from previous president Hisao Tanaka.  As part of its restructuring, Toshiba will sell its TV and washing machine manufacturing plant in Indonesia to Hong Kong-based TV maker Skyworth for about 3bn yen. It is also looking for investors for its healthcare business. The 6,800 job cuts will go in its Lifestyle division, essentially its consumer electronics business, and Toshiba said the cuts would be made by March 2016.  A number of jobs will be lost by offering early retirement to those employed in Japa...

First 8K TV to sell in October by Sharp

Sharp has announced plans to sell an 8K television screen from October.  Although several companies have developed "super hi-vision" resolution test models, this is the first such TV to be made commercially available.  The 8K format provides 16 times as many pixels as 1080p high definition. It creates an image so detailed that it can appear three-dimensional.  However, the 85in (2.16m) device's 16m yen ($133,000; £86,000) price is likely to limit sales.  Interest is expected to come mainly from broadcasters and other companies involved in testing the format. One analyst suggested it would not become a serious proposition for members of the public until the turn of the decade.  We're not expecting 8K TVs targeted at consumers to be released until at least 2016, and we don't expect they will cross one million units until after 2019," said Abhi Mallick, from IHS Technology. "Japan's NHK is the only broadcaster so far to announce plans to  cre...
