Solar plane lands in New York City

A solar-powered airplane finished crossing the United States on Saturday, landing in New York City after flying over the Statue of Liberty during its historic bid to circle the globe, the project team said.  The spindly, single-seat experimental aircraft, dubbed Solar Impulse 2, arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport at about 4 a.m. local time after it took off about five hours beforehand at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Pennsylvania, the team reported on the airplane's website.  Such a pleasure to land in New York! The number of seals born at England's largest colony dropped after nine years of growth

The National Trust counted 2,342 pups born this season at Blakeney in Norfolk - about 80 fewer than last year.  Ajay Tegala, National Trust ranger, said: "This is good news as the seals were spreading at such a rate over such a big area that it makes it easier to protect them."  The Trust said the lower birth rate meant the colony had "stabilised".After grey seals began colonising the spit on the north Norfolk coast, the Trust said there was anecdotal evidence of two pups being born in 1987 or 1988 and a first "official" record of five pups in 1999.  A more accurate standardised method of counting pups began in 2006 when 213 were recorded.The Trust has 12 volunteers to try and make sure people visiting with their dogs did not disturb the breeding colony. Mum can't wait for chemo after baby born 12 weeks early

Ally Louise Smith was born by C-section on Friday weighing just 2lb 5oz after her mother, Heidi Loughlin, was told she had to bring her treatment forward."I want to fast-forward now until March when she will be coming home and my chemo will be over," she told.Photographs of Ally, who is being treated in the neo natal intensive care unit, were released on Tuesday.  Ms Loughlin, a Metropolitan Police officer, from Portishead, North Somerset, told "It's almost like lifting a piece of toast, that's how tiny she feels.  "She came out crying, which we really didn't expect because she is so little."Ms Loughlin found out she had inflammatory breast cancer when she was 13 weeks pregnant. The world's first test tube puppies born after years of attempts, say scientists in the US

The in-vitro fertilisation success paves the way for conserving endangered breeds and could help in the fight against human and animal diseases, say researchers at Cornell University.  The seven beagle and cross-bred beagle-spaniel puppies were born to a surrogate mother.  They were from the same litter but have three sets of parents.  Frozen embryos were implanted in a female dog using techniques similar to those used in human fertility clinics.  Problems with freezing embryos have caused difficulties in the past, but the group say they have perfected this and other techniques.Lead researcher Dr Alex Travis, from Cornell's college of veterinary medicine, said: "We have seven normal happy healthy puppies."  He added: "Since the mid-1970s, people have been trying to do this in a dog and have been unsuccessful.  "Now we can use this technique to conserve the genetics of endangered species."The researchers say IVF is a powerful tool to help endangered spe...
